Can't say I've come across this thread before. One thing I always try and do when downloading is go to the source. So if I'm downloading Spybot S&D for example I will go to the Spybot S&D page and follow their links. If their links happen to point to download.com or some other service provider then so be it.
My reasoning for this is that a program that I use thats released as open source was hijacked, had spyware inserted into it and then it was posted onto download sites like download.com. So people who wanted that piece of software and who went to download.com got the software but loaded with spyware, even though the original had none. As this was a security based product they struggled to gain the trust o fmany people after the incident, which was a shame because they were absolutely without blame in the matter. And usually, I find that I can find something on sourceforge that will do almost any job for me, so thats usually my first port of call.
