..to create a jobs website. Its got to be free and ideally open source. I can't really find anything up to scratch at the moment which is a shame and I'm not sure if I can be bothered to write it myself. Its got to be in PHP and MySQL. Anyone got any ideas? It actually sounds like a decent open source project in the style of phpbb or phpads(new).

I guess, for a list of features:
* categorisation/search/classification of jobs by location, keywords
* "tagging" of jobs and candidates
* email alerts
* RSS feeds?
* Seperate areas for candidates, recruiters and admins
* Allow people to create CVs online and allow it to be searchable by recruiters

So anyone got any ideas? Is there anything out there that could be easily modified to do this sort of stuff? At the moment I'm half considering hacking up my cms script to do it and half considering giving up (its only to make a quick buck after all...)

How about mambo?
I don't know if this may fit in to the job, but I liked the admin section interface and its pretty powerful (atleast I've heard so). biggrin.gif

It is extremely powerful. There are loads of options to customize everything. I have it installed on my local server, I was going to try playing around with it, but there's too much and couldn't be bothered in the end.

Cheers for the suggestions I've downloaded it, got some free time iver the next two weeks so I'll see what its like. I'm not usually one to go with pre-made scripts but, well, laziness and all that...

You may be looking for CATS which you can find at www.catsone.com. From the demo it appears to meet most of your requirement in so far as you have described it, and looks really nice. It's certainly PHP, but can't tell if its MySQL. However, even if it weren't you could easily convert it to use dB abstraction e.g. PEAR :: DB, test and then switch the dB to MySQL. That would be a lot easier than writing the script from scratch.

Just one hitch - the script is still under development and not yet available for download. A lot easier however, than trying to hack Mambo to make it fit (and personally I'd go for Joomla nowadays anyway).

Good luck

CMS that aren't open-source are generally very expensive, aren't they? I mean, like $3000-4000 for a license...? Or was the one I was looking at over-pricing?

I think thats a pretty spot on ballpark figure actually Waleed. Some of the very limited scripts I've seen (more limited than the CMS I wrote myself!) were going for about £700, which seems somewhat extortionate.

I think I'm going to go down a different route with this site, got a pretty good idea for it but I just need to see if it'll work or not. So much to do so little effort... wink.gif

Oh and I don't think that cats application does what I'm looking for, its more fo rin house HR stuff from what I can see.
