My last post shared some of our conceptual designs of the feed icon and expressed some of the criteria that we are using to select the right icon. Several of the comments liked icon #4 simply because it looked liked the Firefox icon, and many (like this one) suggested that we work with the Firefox team to standardize on an icon.

This seemed like a very good idea, so in November, Amar and I took a visit down to Silicon Valley to meet with John Lilly and Chris Beard from Mozilla to get their thoughts on it. We all agreed that it’s in the user’s best interest to have one common icon to represent RSS and RSS-related features in a browser.

While the choice of the RSS icon is a small story, I found it very interesting to know that 1) MS is interested consistency between FF and IE and 2) They actually asked Mozilla about using the icon. Now the devil's advocate inside of me says they want to use the icon so that they can try to grab Firefox users back to IE more easily once IE7 launches, but hey, that's just me.

I just found this very interesting...

I have to say I let out a chuckle when I saw this. Given all the current cross-browser compatibility problems I'm delighted to see MS and Mozilla are in collaboration to create a consistent browsing experience to all. Thank God the days of CSS hacks are behind us!

Oh, wait a minute, they've chosen the most pointless thing to strike up a deal on. This stinks of Schoolkids trying to act grown up.

Anyway, I'm a cynic. Lets just hope this is the start of some web standards that MS will follow. Because I think we all know MS wouldn't consider anything as "standard" unless they have an input and the ability to customise it to their end.
