Test builds of Mozilla Thunderbird with an updated patch for tabbed message browsing are available. Developed by Myk Melez, this feature allows users to right-click a message header and select "Open Message in New Tab" from the context menu. They can also update advanced preferences to make the Enter key open messages in tabs. Trunk and 1.5 branch builds with the patch applied are available at Myk's blog.

I wouldn't mind testing this out. There are some screen shots available, too:

I think its a nice feature, and its certainly a good idea to have a unified feature set across thunderbird and firefox but I just can't see me ever using anything like that. Unlike web pages, I only tend to have one email open at a time. Although having said that, maybe having the functionality available would change the way I read email (and RSS feeds as I use Thunderbird as my main aggregator). Personally I'd rather have them concentrate with better compatibility with syncing software and calendars.

I couldn't agree with you more, Si. As my memory continues to fail me, I've become more and more dependent on my Outlook calendar at work. I love the mail feature of Thunderbird, but the slow progress on Sunbird and the lack of true integration gets harder and harder to deal with.

The last time I checked, there was a way to sync with the Palm OS, but they'd better start looking at Windows Mobile and all the others some time soon.
