recently i downloaded the newest firefox version and i had a few older versions so naturally i deleted the older versions, when i rebooted all the firefox desktop icons were gone and its not under programs , so therefore i have no way to access what i downloaded, so i figured naturally i will just reinstall it and it will correct the problems,
except now it wont let me uninstall it.

i dont know what gives with it.

any ideas?
bassrek
What was the last version you had installed on your machine? Do you remember if you actually ran the Windows installer to install it, or did you just extract a .zip file and double-click the firefox.exe file to run it?
Daniel8_9_3
i installed from the windows installer right now i installed the latest but i think it was like 1.0pr i removed and one other old version like .09 or something to that effect
bassrek
So you're saying that nothing is listed under Add/Remove programs for Mozilla Firefox?

Are there any files or directories in C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox ?
Daniel8_9_3
well i had the newest version listed because i uninstalled two previous versions however when i uninstalled two previous versions it removed all icons desktop/startbar/quikmenu so i had no way to access the newly installed version, when i tried to removed the newest version it gave me a registry message saying it was unable to uninstall it.

however i figured i thought about re running the .exe file and once i did that it reinstalled with an icon in the start menu, i did pick every available icon though
but i guess one in the start menu is good enough for now cool.gif

Glad it's cleared up. Unfortunately, your situation is a common one. They still haven't really cleaned up the whole upgrade process.

That's why I always suggest to everyone before installing a new Firefox version to be sure to completely uninstall the previous version first. People get scared to do that, but the profile/bookmark/theme/extension information is kept in a different location, so you aren't in danger of loosing anything.

actually i think i've told you this before but on several different occasions i've logged in to find all my bookmarks to have completely vanished.

and this is after having firefox installed for a while and its happened in about at least 2 versions i can remember.

i will take heed to that though next time about uninstalling smile.gif i just didnt think of that before wink.gif

But what if we have two different versions on two different OSs... on the same computer. stupid question, but never hurts to ask... wink.gif
bassrek
This doesn't pose any problems, Waleed. If you have 2 OSes on the same machine, they'll exist in different partitions and they don't communicate to each other, so no conflicts.

u know firefox wiped out half of my favorites recently with the newest version
they definitely have a glitch somewhere when it comes to favorites, thats the only real problem i ever have is with my bookmarks.

apparently it happens in the newest version as well.

Daniel8_9_3

I upgraded to 1.0.2 yesterday ... no trouble at all smile.gif

No problems with the bookmarks, though every now and again FF refuses to start up (or stays active as process without doing anything but blocking a "second start").

The three-finger-salute solves that easily though.

I had to re-install FireFox yesterday so upgraded from 1.0 to 1.0.2 and had some problems. Basically I had to upgrade because FireFox would crash immediately after loading the start page when I fire it up, it would just switch into not-responding an do nothing. Killing the process didn't do anything and neither did rebooting. So I uninstalled and re-installed the newest version. Basically the same thing was going on. I started FF in safe mode and uninstalled some of the extensions and themes I had installed. I think the problem was with the ad-blocker extension as I have reinstalled all the others with no problems. Its important to try the safe mode option if FF isn't working cause it saved me a hell of alot of hassle and all is running smoothly now.

Oh and has anyone tried out the checky extension? its pretty cool. Theres a mountain of validity checks out there and checky puts them all at your disposal. You can even simulate what your site will look like to various colour blind people!
bassrek
I've heard numerous complaints about 1.0.2 on Mozillazine although I haven't had any. Extensions always seem to be at the root of the problems though. The biggest issue I had with Firefox in the past pointed to the tabbed browser extension. After I removed it, I haven't had any issues. I think they've really got to get a good, central repository for all extensions. A place where you know you can safely install an extension that won't break Firefox. The Mozilla update center should be it, but they are understaffed to do it.

I haven't checked out checky. How does it compare to the web developer toolbar? That's been one of my essential extensions since day 1 (maybe day 2... wink.gif )
sjthomas
Actually, now you mention it I un-installed the tabbed extensions as well so that may very well be it.

I have to admit that the web developer toolbar is great, smply indispensibl for web developers. Checky takes the validation options on that toolbar a step further. Basically if you install it you get a right click option on any page for about forty (yes I did say FORTY) different tools such as CSS/HTML validation, accessibility reports, search engine spider simulations and even more weird ones like simulating your site in Lynx and as seen by colour blind people (witht he most common tyoes of colour blindness). Its all stuff you could find yourself through a SE but it puts it all in one place.

I completely agree with your point on the extensions. There are many top quality extension out there but they certainly need to be managed centrally and verified that they work with various versions of FF. Hopefully when they sort out all this upgrading problem they canreference the extension database to determine which ones are appropriate for the upgrade an dupdate/disable them appropriately. I'm sure the Mozilla foundation could get some volunteers to do this for them.
Joe
Whats the link for that extension Si?
sjthomas
Here you go bud wink.gif

It works fine with 1.0.2 can't vouch for others though.
