Ben Goodger has announced an updated schedule for Mozilla Firefox 1.1. The final version of 1.1, previously scheduled for March, will now be released a little later than originally planned (an exact date isn't given). In addition, there will be a series of test builds issued before 1.1 final: a Developer Preview, a Preview Release and one or more release candidates. Mozilla Firefox 1.1 isn't expected to contain any major new features but will include updated versions of core components such as Gecko, which has received many improvements over the last few months. The Firefox Roadmap will be updated soon. Jesse Ruderman has a list of changes to expect in Firefox 1.1.
An updated Gecko engine should mean faster page rendering and maybe an expanded quirks mode? I'm not upset about it being delayed, though. 1.0 has worked great for me.
Somebody asked about SQLite implementation, and I was unfamiliar with this. Turns out, the plan for Mozilla and Firefox is to switch from their multiple file format for all the configuration files (prefs, certs, bookmarks, history, etc.) and switching to a unified database store for everything. This is quite interesting. Although I've never experienced it, suddenly disappearing bookmarks is a reoccuring problem, as is trying to make anything out of the history.dat file.
