Coloring a Black and white image

Coloring black and white images is a a fairly easy task, but it is time consuming if you have a very large and detailed image.
By detailed i would mean that the areas that you want to color have intricate edges. For example, a black and white box would be quick because it's straight lines, whereas coloring a person would be trickier.

Lets start out with a sample black and white image to color:

Now zoom in using the zoom tool on the left (magnifying glass), let's focus on coloring the hand. We need to select the hand with one fo the selection tools, choose whichever one you are more comfortable with, i use the "polygon lasso tool" , this is the hand selected on my black and white image

Easy so far yup? ofcourse it is smile.gif

Next step is to add the color, go to image > adjustments > variations
You'll get a window like the one below, here's where your eye comes in, you'll have to chose what variations make for the best color. (In mine i used More red - more yellow - darker)

Click OK, deselect the hand and zoom out again, hey presto smile.gif

here's a few others i did, i will also be adding a tutorial on repairing scratches, cracks and splits on old fotos.

just playing around, i'd seen some papers on using hue/saturation and colorize to add color but i didn't like the effect it gave so played with other things on there and came across this.

good job Leo thumbsupsmileyanim.gif
that will definetly come in handy. I've tried the colorize method, but it always ends up looking really fake. This is much better.

I use the pick and paint method. It takes a long time, and it's a pain sometimes..
