Photoshop page curl (lift) tutorial - Beginner

Ok, we've all see those page curls before and if you're like me you'll think they're a bit old now, so let's see if we can come up with a page curl that's just slightly different, and hopefully looks better than the usual page curl

user posted image open up a new document of a good size, i've used 640x480 (you'll want to use a webpages dimensions if you're going to use this for a layout)

user posted image Create a new layer, use the selection tool to select a rectangle shape in the lefthand corner like in the image, and fill it with the color of your choice

user posted image

user posted image We're now going to make the bottom narrower than the to using the distort tool (edit > transnform > distort), copy what i've done in the image

user posted image

user posted image Now we need to give it a curl, because when a pages curls up it does just that, it has a curl not a straight edge. So we need the selection tool again but this time the Ellitpical marquee tool (click on the little arrow next to the normal selection tool and you'll see it here in the list), now try and recreate the image below by selecting the area and then deleting it

user posted image Now we need to increase it's realism by giving it a shadow. Duplicate the layer (in the layers palette, bottom right usually, right click on the layer and select duplicate). Once you've done that use the fill tool (bucket) to fill it with a darker color because it's going to be the shadow. once you've done that we'll need to rotate it slightly, go to edit > transform > rotate , try and recreate the picture below. You'll notice the little corner sticking up out the top, that's ok, once you're happy with the angle you'll need to use the eraser tool to erase that little bit sticking up.

user posted image You'll notice that some of the edges are a bit jaggy, to make the edges smoother of page the page curl and the shadow just use the blur tool, make it failry big (35) and at 100% strength and just run along blurring the edges, the page curl will smooth up just nicely.

user posted image Well that's it for the page curl, all you need to do is use it in your design, here's a quick sample i did which would serve as a navigation 'area' on a website with the page curl

thankyou smile.gif

it's quite easy to implement it into different styles of design, it's only a little addition to a page but i think it adds a little dimension to it, here's a more business style i just threw together:

you could easily sell a simple design like this for hundreds of dollars, and it takes next to no time to put together smile.gif

Why have you given that layer a layer mask? Thats where your getting the problem, remove the mask and delete the selction on the actual layer itself.

i don't know. if i try to make a shape it adds a new layer and a layer mask itself. then if i delete the mask, the whole document becomes the color the shape was.

Go back a few steps smile.gif

Create your shape, transform it and then click 'Apply'

While still on the layer click on the eliptical marquee tool and make your selection

you shouldn't be using a shape, to get the rectangle shape do as i did and create a new layer and then make a rectangular selection and fill it, otherwise you can rasterize the shape that you already have, go to layer > rasterize > shape.

Heres something else you can do.

when you are making the shadow, don't duplicate the layer and stuff. instead, go to:
Layer > Layer Style > Drop Shadow (click on it)

In the window that opens, enter the following values:

Blend Mode: multiply, and the color: black (#000000)
Opacity: 77%
Angle: 164, use global light- checked.
Distance: 18px
Spread: 0%
Size: 38px

Contour - half diagnal
Anti-aliased, unchecked
Noise: 0%

Heres what you get:
